Really!? And it was going so well?
From what I have read about mastitis, it is usually a sign to slow down and take it easy. I've heard it's a good idea to get nekkid with the baby and get in bed and just rest and nurse for a couple of days. Do everything you can because I hear that the pain from a bad infection will drop you to your knees.
KellyMom has some natural treatment ideas if you are interested: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/natural-treatments.html#mastitis
thanks, i called the ob and they arecalling in a prescrition fore me. maybe it is a pluggrd duct?
If you have mastitis, you need the doctor to get you some antibiotics. You'll know it's mastitis if, in addition to the painful boobs, you have a high fever and fell like death warmed over. At least that's how it was for me. Good luck and feel better!
Oh no! I've had a blocked duct at least 5 times since February. I hope it's just a blocked duct and not mastitis. Is it red and hot to the touch and do you feel like you have the flu? Or is it just hard like a golf ball under your skin and painful?
For blocked ducts, here is what worked for me:
-hot, wet compresses. Take a disposable diaper and fill it with hot water (but make sure it's not so hot that it burns your breast). Put it on that side for 10 minutes before you feed him. The moist heat will open things up and make it easier to drain the duct. The disposable diaper trick is awesome because it holds the water in so it doesn't leak all over you like a wet washcloth, and it holds heat for a long time.
- Empty, empty, empty the breast. Have him nurse nurse nurse and use the pump as often as you can. I'm not sure what kind of pump you got, but you need a good one with strong suction. Maybe rent a hospital grade one for the short term.
-Try dangle feeding to get gravity's help. It sounds bizarre, but put Peter on the floor and get on all fours and nurse him that way with your breast dangling. It changes the milk pressure on your tissues and may make it easier to work the plug out.
-load up on the Advil to reduce inflammation
- Use a wide toothed comb to massage the blocked side. It sounds bizarre, but a nurse at my doctor's office recommended it. It works particularly well in the shower when you can put some soap or body wash on the comb to make it slippery. For some reason the small pressure points of the comb work even better than massaging by hand.
- Another weird tip is to put a vibrator on that side (gently!) to try to work out the plug.
Some women get dried or stringy milk that ends up coming out eventually. I never saw anything like that. Usually it would be hard and painful for 1/2 day to a full day while I tried all of the above things. Once it resolves, it can have stretched out the duct and make it more likely for it to occur again, so keep using those tips for a few days after it feels better.
I hope you feel better soon.
it sounds plugged, my ob is gonna call me back. i am taking prescription motrin,we bought a hospital grade playtex embrace. The hot diaper feels AWESOME!Although I am very glad no one can see me.
